Later in September we had a visit to the Royal Opera House Covent Garden with a behind the scenes tour.
It was such an interesting visit with an introduction to the history, including the background to times when there were fires which ended with sustained closure. Our guide showed examples of ballet and opera clothing which we were able to handle. It was fascinating to know their history and to see the mechanics of their structure as well as to learn about the logistics of getting all the correct costumes in the right places at the right times.
We sat in on a rehearsal for Eugene Onegin and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. It was all so interesting but for me to see the workshop where so many of the props are made was just fascinating with so many different skills being used to make props from feasts to beds.
This was followed by a short walk to the Palm Court Brasserie where we had a good three course lunch with Covent Garden just outside. The food was good and it was not too noisy so we were all able to chat and hear each other. Thanks to Stephen Bickford-Smith for organising our visit to the Opera House.
